ABOUT
BURTON'S PAVING
After working for 16 years for Seymour Paving, the top paving company in the Western Cape, i decided to follow my passion and go on my own in 2010.
Awards
During my stint as their sales manager i personally designed several domestic jobs which made the finals in the prestigious Corobrik awards for excellence.
Brick Paving Institute
I was also on the committee of the Brick Paving Institute and headed the complaints section for seven years. in this capacity i acted as an independent neutral paving expert writing reports for unhappy customers who believed their paving was below industry standards.
Personal Service
I am now in the enviable position of being able to give true personal service not always possible in the rigid corporate paving world.
Design Drawings
It all starts with good design in the form of a scale drawing showing all the customers' requirements and paving detail even if the job is a repair. I am a practical hand's on owner and have an excellent crew who follow my Philosophy of a happy satisfied customer through to the final clean up.

Where are we based?
Claremont is where we operate from, and most of our clients are in the southern suburbs, but we do work further afield.
Some of the paths that we have laid
Paths
Stretcher
Like the bricks in a wall, easy to lay, very forgiving. Can be used with 1st grade pavers, 2nd grade pavers, metric sizes, imperial sizes, cement pavers which are traditionally size stable and clay pavers where each batch has different sizes due to the variables in the high temperature firing process. Some people believe the pattern is boring.

Pattern is stronger if lines run accross the line of traffic
Stretcher flows around curves and bends
works well.
works for free flowing design or formal square lines
Correctly laid across the flow of traffic offering load distribution if the brakes are applied
Stretcher bends beautifully around bends, and flows like a river.

Patterns
English Bond
This is similar to stretcher but has a row or two of headers running in the pattern to make it less boring.
Second grade, and clay pavers with their size differential can be accommodated in this pattern.

Stack Bond or Basket Weave
Popular in the UK, can be very neat but only with metric sizes where the width is equal to double the length. The main lines run like a checker board pattern easy to the eye but also weak from a construction point of view.

I would not recomend it. Hitting the brakes will transfer all the load along the lines causing the pavers to popout, chip, and crack
great for straight paths and right angle bends but not for free flowing curves.
works well.
Works well with formal rectangular squared off pools.
2nd hand pavers work great in this informal setting.
Cement bond pavers are all exactly the same size and being 100x200 are perfect for this neat formal pattern
Not for those who like neat straight lines
Herringbone
This pattern is great in hiding slight imperfections in the pavers and when you lay it at 45* it is visually homogeneous. The lines can look untidy with imperial size pavers. It is the strongest pattern giving a locking up action.

This is my pattern of choice for driveways but laid at 45* there is some wastage with cuttings.
Visually great, but lots of wastage along the sides. curvy paths have to be cut into the pattern.
works well.
Visually interesting but lots of wastage due to cuttings, especially with curved corners.
This is a 45* herringbone pattern, notice how the lines dissapear, but more pavers are used in the cuttings all arround.
'Notice how the curves are cut into the pattern
Square on herringbone allows for less paver wastage.
Second grade pavers tend to be untidy with this pattern
